The most important thing we discovered after working with over 6,000 young people across six states in Nigeria is that purpose comes before qualification. A degree opens doors, but a sense of direction tells you which doors to walk through.
At Lifesaver, we have seen this pattern repeat across every cohort we have trained. The young people who thrive are not always the ones with the strongest academic results. They are the ones who understand why they are learning, who they want to serve, and what kind of leader they want to become.
The gap between education and readiness
Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world. By 2030, over 60% of the population will be under 25. That is an extraordinary opportunity, but only if these young people are equipped not just with knowledge but with the ability to lead, to solve problems, and to create value in their communities.
Our leadership certification programme was designed to address exactly this gap. We do not teach theory. We teach practice: how to listen, how to resolve conflict, how to take initiative when nobody is watching, and how to serve others before serving yourself.
A young person who knows their purpose will find a way. A young person with only a certificate will wait for someone to give them one.
What we have learned from the field
After certifying young adults across Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi, here are the three biggest lessons we keep coming back to:
- Identity before ambition. Help a young person answer “who am I?” before asking “what do I want?” and the ambition follows naturally.
- Community over competition. The ones who build support networks grow faster than the ones who try to do everything alone.
- Small actions compound. A single mentoring session might not change someone’s life. But twelve sessions over a year will.
These are not theoretical insights. They are the patterns we have observed in thousands of real lives, in real communities, over real years of work.
The road ahead
We are expanding our leadership certification to reach young people in three more countries by the end of 2027. We are also developing digital modules so that geography is no longer a barrier to access.
If you believe in the potential of young people, if you want to see a generation of purpose-driven leaders across Africa and beyond, there are many ways to be part of this story. Volunteer, donate, partner, or simply share this message with someone who needs to hear it.
